20 Strange & Helpful Every Day Uses For Olive Oil

Olive oil is known for being delicious-- perfect for Italian recipes, natural foods, sauteeing, cooking and (my favorite) Caprese salad.

But did you know that it's good for so many more things?  Things like:

• Natural skin & body care
• Your daily beauty regimen
• Home & garden care
• And much more

Here's 20 of our favorite uses for olive oil.

1. Use as a body scrub. Combine sugar and salt into a thick paste and scrub body to remove dead skin and leave skin glowing.
2. Swap our your lip gloss. Dab on to lips directly or combine with equal parts beeswax to make your own.
3. Moisturize dry skin. Rub into skin, focusing on very rough or dry patches. Let air dry.
4. Condition your hair. Let olive oil soak into hair (especially roots) to strengthen it and make it more flexible.
5. Remove paint from skin.  Rub olive oil into dried paint on skin.  Wipe oil away and the paint will go with it.  If it’s being really stubborn, create a scrub with olive oil and salt, which will leave your skin clean and exfoliated.
6. Pre-make an oil & herb mix for cooking.  Combine EVOO and herbs in an ice cube tray and store in the freezer.  Remove seasoned oil cubes for stirfries, pasta and more.
7. Protect food from freezer burn.  Use as a “protective layer” when freezing sauces.  Before freezing, add olive oil which will harden into a butter substance that can be easily removed when you’re ready to use the sauce.
8. Reduce the appearance of stretch marks.  Combine equal parts cocoa butter and olive oil for a stretch-mark minimizer.
9. Aid digestion.  Taking a spoonful of olive oil can help aid digestion and “smooth out” your insides.
10. As a saddle/bridle conditioner. Use olive oil to condition saddles, bridles and boots.
11. As a shaving cream. Use olive oil instead of soap or shaving cream for a smooth, comfortable shave.
12. Polish wood furniture. Apply olive oil to a soft cloth and buff wood. Or combine 2 parts olive oil with 1 part lemon juice or vinegar.
13. Condition cuticles. Apply olive oil on a cotton swab to moisturize cuticles.
14. Measure peanut butter. Wipe measuring cups with olive oil before measuring peanut butter, molasses or other sticky ingredients. It allows them to slide right out of the cup.
15. Unstick a zipper. Allow oil to penetrate the zipper, then unzip as usual.
16. As a supplement for cats, dogs and horses. Add a small dose of olive oil to your pets meal to boost the shine in their coat and give them the same health benefits you enjoy.
17. Lend a shine to brass. Apply olive oil onto a soft cloth and then rub it onto brass hardware.
18. Ease a scratchy throat. A spoonful of olive oil can help get rid of that tickle.
19. Protect hands from yard work. Put olive oil on your hands before gardening or other dirty work to prevent dirt buildup and make cleanup easier.
20. Easy clean up of garden tools. Spritz some olive oil on your tools to cut down on dirt buildup.
