Think there's room for your business in the natural food industry?  The short answer is yes.

All numbers show that consumer preference towards natural and organic foods is up.  There is both a large and fast growing consumer market for your products.  

But to be able to make educated business decisions, you'll need more specific data than that.  You'll need information on the consumer market in detail; understanding where the opportunities are and what specific target markets are growing can help you understand how you want to develop, position and market your healthy products.

We've compiled 5 infographics below to help you understand some fast facts about the natural food industry today.  This will give you the basic insight you need to start to explore the industry and decide how to move forward with your products.

 

Fast Facts

In 2013, non-GMO product sales grew 99%.  During the same period, organic product sales grew 12%.  Conventional products grew 2.3% (this is a good baseline for the industry standard).

 

In the long run (looking at the last 8 years, from 2005-2013), non-GMO products grew 2x as fast as conventional products; their sales grew at 6.2%, while conventional products grew at a rate of 2.7%.

 

The overall percentage of the non-gmo products in the natural foods market is small.  Only 1% of the food and beverage industry uses non-gmo alternative products (like Non-GMO Soybean Oil or Non-GMO Canola Oil).

 

GMO products make up 76% of the food and beverage industry, and organic products make up 4%.  19% of these products are inherintly non-gmo (naturally, they're non-gmo like sunflower and safflower oil), and aren't included in the figures above.

 

Because Whole Foods Market now requires any vendors that have a non-gmo claim to be Non-GMO Project Verified, this certification has become a baseline requirement for anyone selling into the natural foods market.

 

Natural industry market sales are trending upwards, with new retailers opening all the time.

 

The majority of people site "to stay well" as the reason that they choose healthy foods.  

 

The younger generations (ages 18-34) are more likely to be interested in gluten free, dairy freem vegan or vegetarian foods.

 

29% of moms want to buy organic food more often.

 

When healthy moms buy food for their kids, the top 5 things that they buy are fruit, granola bars, vegetables, crackers and cheese.

 

81% of US families are buying some or all of their food organic.  

 

42% of parents report that their trust in the USDA organic seal has ingreased.

 

When asked why they are buying organic, 48% of parents answered because it's healthier, 30% answered because they wanted to avoid pesticides and fertilizers, 29% wanted to avoid anibiotics and growth hormones, and 22% wanted to avoid GMOs.
