Tom Mueller's 'Extra Virginity' Shines Light on Olive Oil Industry

Written by Hannah Broaddus | October 18, 2013

Since Tom Mueller's article, Slippery Business was featured in the New Yorker in 2007, Mueller has become known as an industry expert within the "olive oil world."  In December of 2011 his most recent book, Extra Virginity, was published detailing the striking disparity between the wonderful and fraudulent practices occurring across the industry. Since then, he's been a highlight on various news venues like Yahoo! News and National Public Radio.  His research is becoming a hot topic with olive oil suppliers and consumers across the world.  See our founder's book review, below:

Extra Virginity:  The Sublime and Scandalous World of Olive Oil

Captivating and provocative, Extra Virginity reveals a glimpse into the obscured history of olive oil, so desperately misunderstood until now.  His hard-hitting report presents vivid narratives of honor and fraud within the world of extra virgin olive oil and brings the explicit truth to much-needed light.

This corruption, unexamined for far too long, is very real.  Working in the corporate olive oil industry, I perpetually come up against the lack of understanding and concern for truly how much adulterated olive oil is on the market today.  It enrages me that companies are not held responsible for their actions or ingredient labels, and that they’re taking advantage of their customers.

Tom Mueller’s insightful history finally brings this prolific issue of adulteration into view for all to see.  My hope is that Extra Virginity makes a lasting impression on everyday consumers who have been unable to fully understand the hidden truth until now.  This book is ridiculously overdue and is regarded with the utmost respect and value.
