How To Dispose of your 55 Gallon Drums of Olive Oil After Production

Written by Hannah Broaddus | January 24, 2014

55 gallon drums are one of the most common packaging sizes for olive oil.  These drums are commonly plastic or steel (all drums from Centra Foods are currently steel).

Once you’ve used your 55 gallon steel drums, you may be wondering what to do with them.  Most companies dispose of the drums in the garbage.  Some are successfully sold on Craigslist to people looking for empty, old or re-usable drums.

If you’re looking to cut down on waste, consider the Bag-in-Box totes.  They consist of a strong outer cardboard container with a bag inside.  The oil is dispensed from a spigot at the bottom of the tote.  These can be broken down and recycled after use.  They hold up to 330 gallons of oil, which means you would recycle one box for every 4-6 drums you would have disposed of; dependent upon what size tote you chose.  They also have the advantage of reducing oil and shipping costs.
