Sometimes edible oils are used for more than just cooking. If you’re on the look out for a biodegradable oil to use for a seemingly “unusual” application, we can point you in the right direction!

Food grade or cheap, biodegradable oils are often use for road projects, agriculture, construction lubrication, and other seemingly unusual or non-food related purposes. We often run across questions from companies and individuals researching oils for these less prevalent purposes.

So what kind of oil is best for these applications?

Most commonly, people choose the cheapest oil available. For applications like this, it’s normal to chose an oil without all the frills: you don’t need a non-gmo oil, or an expeller pressed oil because it’s not being eaten. Just a conventional, plain old vegetable oil will do!

What is a vegetable oil? Vegetable oil is usually soy or canola. Be on the look out for the cheapest option of canola oil or soybean oil. These are all going to be conventional oils.

Explain what you are working on with any potential suppliers. They can help direct you to the cheapest and best option that they may have — depending on your location (and what’s most common in that area). At the end of the day, the best option may depend on the region where you are shipping to.
