How To Get Bulk Olive Oil Out of a Bag-In-Box Tote

Written by Hannah Broaddus | December 11, 2013

Demand for the 275 and 330 gallon Bag-In-Box (BIB) tote is growing in the manufacturing industry. There are many reasons that buyers opt for this packaging, including a cheaper price, easier disposal and additional savings on shipping. This recyclable tote is an alternative to the industry standard, which is a hard plastic tote with an aluminum frame.

One of the most popular questions that we get from customers is, “how do we get the olive oil out of this BIB tote?”If you’re used to the standard hard plastic totes that have a built-in spigot set into the base, this is a natural question.

How to get oil out of the BIB tote

The BIB totes have a re-usable spigot that screws into a hole in the bottom of the BIB tote. This spigot is provided to you with the purchase of your first tote. Review the example instructions for below (specifically for the 330 gallon size) for more details.

  1. Remove the plug from the dispensing hole at the bottom of the tote.
  2. Screw the spigot assembly kit (including spout and cutter) into the hole.
  3. With the valve open, shove the cutter tool located on the front of the valve backwards in a single motion. This will puncture the protective membrane inside the spigot, allowing the olive oil to flow from the bag into the spout.
  4. Slide the cutter tool back out until it stops. Close the valve by turning the yellow handle.
  5. Unthread the cutter tool from the spigot. First, ensure that the valve is closed. A small amount of olive oil will come out of the spout.
  6. A quick-connect or other fitting may now be threaded into the valve. The tote is now ready for dispensing.
