5 Quick Tips On How To Store Olive Oil

Advise for the Home Chef or small manufacturer

  1. Keep your oil in a cool, dark place. Even if you refill your own bottles, store that bottle in a cabinet away from light.
  2. Choose packaging like green glass, tins, and bag in a box containers over clear plastic or glass. These packaging styles keep light out and help preserve the shelf life of the oil.
  3. For even longer shelf life, choose a packaging size that keeps air out too, like the 3 Liter Bag in a Box which has a bag that collapses around the oil as it’s used.
  4. For home kitchens that use a lot of olive oil (or production facilities that use just a little) buy the 35 Lb. Container and get the attachable spigot. You can lay the 35 Lber down on ashelf (preferably in the basement, cool and dark!), and pour out of the spigot into a small refillable bottle.
  5. If you want to save money by buying in bulk, buy a pallet (60) of the 35 Lb. Containers. They help keep the oil longer than the larger sizes because they keep the air away from the oil in small batches until you’re ready to use it. They are also easy to handle because you can carry them and they stack into corners of your garage or basement until you need them. Our rule of thumb: if you can use them within 6 months and they save you money, go for it!
