Tell the truth, tell the truth, tell the truth.
                                  - Sheryl Louise Moller

This quote struck me when I started reading Eat, Pray, Love a number of years ago.  I still hear it in the back of my concious.

Since I started working for Centra Foods and dove head first into the olive oil industry, I've heard it a lot, replaying in my head.  It's the real reason why I give such candid advice, and why, at the end of the day, I just want to point you in the right direction, teach you something, and answer your questions sincerely.

Many of you know me, you read the blogs that I write, but you still may not have an inside look at the olive oil industry-- the world that I live in day in and day out.

I'd like to invite you inside now; it's a complex, interesting world in here.

How Mainstream Food Brands Are Affecting The Availability Of Non-GMO

Posted by Hannah Broaddus

The era of Non-GMO is upon us.

No matter how you feel about the non-GMO movement, it's a fact that it's in full swing in the food industry, and it's still picking up speed.

This movement, still in its adolescence, will come in stages.  It's childhood was the blossoming of demand for non-GMO foods and the establishment of small companies and niche brands that catered to this new trend.  Next comes the transition of large mainstream companies to non-GMO, as they hop on the bandwagon.  In fact, we're just moving into phase two of this movement now.

This evolution of large companies "hopping on board" has an affect on the entire supply and demand chain for non-GMO ingredients.  If you also buy non-GMO, it will affect how your business gets ingredients, if they're available and what the prices are.

You'll want to know this, and you'll want to begin preparing now.

3 Downsides To Californian Olive Oil As A Manufacturing Ingredient

Posted by Hannah Broaddus

Imported olive oil versus its domestic counterpart seems to be an ever growing debate in the olive oil industry here in the US.

Many manufacturers wonder if they should be using a US-grown olive oil, or if they will need to rely on imported olive oil to fulfill their needs.  The answer lies in looking closely at domestic olive oil-- both the wonderful traits of the oil itself and the US olive oil industry as a whole.

With the rise of gourmet olive oil retailers and the growing concern about oil adulteration, a turn towards domestic sources (read: high quality oil, from trusted suppliers close to home) is a natural one.  But for the manufacturing industry specifically, there are inherent challenges that would emerge by relying on only US sources for oil.

Whole Foods Will Require Transparent GMO Labeling By 2018

Posted by Hannah Broaddus

Whole Foods is showing their support for a consumers “right to know” concerning GMOs. At the Natural Products Expo West in spring of 2013, they announced that by 2018 all products in their US and Canadian stores must be labeled to indicate if they contain GMOs (genetically modified organisms).

This 5 year deadline will allow them to work with manufacturers to help transition their ingredients to non-GMO sources and/or change all appropriate labeling to clearly state when ingredients containing GMOs are used.

Posted by Hannah Broaddus

Gourmet olive oil and vinegar stores have exploded in popularity in the last 10 years. Consumers love these interactive specialty shops, which allow them to taste each type of oil and mix and match flavors before buying. The success of these shops has prompted many specialty food markets and generic grocery stores to include a new “dispense-your-own” bulk olive oil section.

The Dirty Secrets of the Olive Oil Industry

Posted by Hannah Broaddus

Olive oil adulteration has been a long-standing issue in the olive oil industry.  Adulteration, also known as “cutting” is the practice of diluting olive oil by blending it with cheaper, low-quality oils like hazelnut,  canola or soybean into olive oil and marketing it as 100% olive oil.  Often, this process includes dying and flavoring the cheaper oils so that they look and taste like olive oil.  However, the cut product lacks all of the health benefits found in the genuine product.

While many assume that because this practice is wildly illegal, it must have been prevented long ago.  Unfortunately, that is not the case.  The sad fact is that the FDA simply does not have the resources required to make testing olive oil and preventing adulteration a priority at this time.

The Growing Trend - Bulk Dispensers of Extra Virgin Olive Oil

Posted by Hannah Broaddus

Working closely with bulk and wholesale olive oil buyers across the United States, I am privileged to have the latest industry trends revealed to me even before they’ve fully emerged in the marketplace.  Everyday, I speak with buyers from a variety of industries: wholesale distributors, natural grocers, food service companies and local co-ops.  I receive a plethora of requests for olive oil and have the opportunity to uncover the latest “food fashions.”

The newest trend: In-Store Bulk Dispensers of Olive Oil, found in Italian markets and large grocery chains. While this phenomenon has been around for some time in local co-ops, it's popularity has spread to mainstream stores with the growth of the specialty retail olive oil store.

While dry bulk food items have been available at your natural foods co-op and regional grocery chain for years, it’s taken some time for liquid ingredients to be offered with the same propensity.  It’s been proven to me that olive oil will be the product to change all that.

iPhone App Launched for Extra Virgin Olive Oil

Posted by Hannah Broaddus
Many say that Olive Oil is the new wine.  In light of this, a new trend for consumers is to go "oil tasting".  Fortunately, for connoisseurs, a new hip Application for the iPhone, iPad and iTouch has been launched called Go EVOO™.  It helps to educate by providing a bulk of information on extra virgin olive oil, including where shoppers can buy it, what to look for in a good oil, and also allows people to share their ratings on different olive oil farms.

Considering that we only provide wholesale bulk quantities of olive oils, this does not pertain directly to Centra Foods' customer base; however, any application that helps people to recognize what makes certain oils superior to others helps out the industry as a whole.
